Rat Terrier - Small - Adult - Female - Dog - Claire (MI)
Description
This dog is in a fosterhome in: Martin, Michigan Claire was pulled from a county shelter in appalling condition. She was horrible emaciated, covered with fleas, and showing the early signs of kennel cough. But her big, gentle eyes were so appealing that how could anyone resist giving her a chance? It turns out that her skinniness wasn't due to simple neglect or starvation. Claire has been now diagnosed with Insulin Dependent Diabetes and Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI). Both of these conditions are life-long, and Claire will require insulin and a digestive enzyme added to her food for the rest of her life. Since Claire is estimated at only 3-5 years of age, that should be a good, long time. She currently weighs 7.9 lbs, but her ideal weight should be around 11 lbs. Because her diabetes went uncontrolled for so long, Claire is also now battling loss of vision due to cataracts. And her EPI &/or diabetes contribute to her drinking lots of water, so she has had some housetraining challenges. In spite of all her problems, Claire has an amazing spirit, a sweet nature, and a strong will to live and prosper, and she has truly been an inspiration to all those who have met her. Claire will need an adoptive family willing to learn about her medical needs and pay for the life-sustaining meds she will continue to need. For those familiar with EPI, Claire's testing at Texas A&M University gave the following results: cTLI 1.9, Folate 7.7, Cobalamin (B12) 266. More info on EPI at www.epi4dogs.com.
