Time Commitment: Full time (Approximately 40 hours/week)

Position Location (if different from above):

Responsibilities:

• Promote/advocate for mentoring as an important youth development activity
• Participate in personal and professional development
• Coordinate a minimum of one service project annually
• Participate in ongoing civic engagement opportunities
• Recruit mentors
• Recruit/refer mentees
• Monitor and support matches
• Maintain files and records for mentors and mentees
• Screen and interview potential mentors
• Train/orient mentors and mentees
• Establish mentoring matches based on program criteria
• Conduct youth intake/family interviews
• Facilitate positive match closure
• Recognize mentors and/or mentees
• Process and follow up on mentor/mentee application
• Collect, summarize, and evaluate program data
• Plan events in the following areas: recruitment, recognition, social/educational activities, service projects, kick off, fundraising as allowed within AmeriCorps program rules
• Create/implement marketing tools for mentoring program
• Fundraise/write grants as allowed within AmeriCorps program rules
• Develop partnerships with local businesses and organizations
• Coordinate/support mentoring advisory councils/boards
• Serve as an organizational representative as appropriate on community committees
• Establish and/or support mentoring collaboratives


Benefits of National Service:

Each AmeriCorps member will receive training related to mentoring and tutoring programs, child development, volunteer management, building community collaborations, program development and management, communications skills, conflict resolution, resource development, civic engagement, CPR, evaluation and reporting, and portfolio development. Host sites are dedicated to enhancing the professional development, leadership skills, and networking building of each member. AmeriCorps members will receive an annual stipend (paid bi-weekly) of $11,400 before taxes. Members will receive health care paid for by the AmeriCorps program and may also be eligible for child care assistance. Upon successful completion of one year of service the AmeriCorps member will receive an educational award of $4,725 that can be used to pay qualified student loans or future education costs.

The goal of these mentoring initiatives is to increase opportunities for positive adult and older peer involvement in the lives of youth. Experience in the areas of youth development, non-profit management, recreation, promotions, and/or business is desired. Education/experience in education, social services, youth development or communications field desirable. Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher as well as effective researching skills are desirable. Desirable candidates must be able to maintain confidentiality, multitask, keep a positive attitude, and have good communication skills. Reliable transportation is required. Some overnight travel within the state will be necessary.

Desirable characteristics of potential 4-H Mentor Michigan Initiative AmeriCorps recruits are:
•Willingness to learn about youth, communities, mentoring, volunteer development, program planning and implementation, resource development, civic engagement, collaborations and networking, and evaluation and reporting
•Flexibility and patience with teens, volunteers, community partners, and groups
•Demonstrated leadership ability
•Commitment to being a positive role model for others
•Possesses good writing and communication skills
•Possession of valid driver’s license
•Willingness to submit to a criminal background check
